What is the most common form of skin cancer?

Basal cell carcinoma is recognized as the most common form of skin cancer, accounting for the majority of skin cancer diagnoses. This type of cancer arises from the basal cells, which are located in the lower layer of the epidermis. The prevalence of basal cell carcinoma can be attributed to various factors, including prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, making it especially common among individuals who spend significant time outdoors without adequate skin protection.

The characteristics of basal cell carcinoma are typically slow-growing and often appear as pearly or waxy bumps on the skin. They can also show as pink, raised patches or scars that may bleed or crust over, making them identifiable. Due to its slow growth and low propensity to metastasize or spread to other parts of the body, basal cell carcinoma is often treated successfully when detected early.

In contrast, while squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma are also significant forms of skin cancer, they are less prevalent than basal cell carcinoma. Keratoacanthoma, although a skin lesion that may resemble squamous cell carcinoma, is generally regarded as a less common and distinct entity.
